Former Vice President Kamala Harris has launched a strategic outreach campaign to the Democratic Party’s progressive flank, including anti-Israel activists and socialist leaders, as polling shows her leading the 2028 presidential primary field following her 2024 election loss.
Shifting Left After Electoral Defeat
Harris personally contacted New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic socialist who previously attempted to block President Joe Biden from the 2024 nomination. The phone call occurred after left-wing candidates swept New York primaries last week, defeating multiple incumbents. During their conversation, Harris congratulated Mamdani on his successful endorsement slate and discussed the party’s direction moving forward.
Mamdani confirmed the outreach during a Wednesday interview, stating the former vice president had initiated contact and they had maintained communication over recent months. The mayor, known for his anti-Israel activism, expressed appreciation for Harris’s engagement with the progressive movement as she attempts to rebuild her political coalition.
Courting the Uncommitted Movement
Harris also reached out multiple times to Abbas Alawieh, co-founder of the Uncommitted Movement that opposed Biden’s reelection over Israel policy. Alawieh revealed he met with Harris in Detroit after receiving several calls from her. He told Harris that constituents in his Michigan State Senate district had lost family members in Israeli military operations and his grandmother’s home was destroyed.
The Democratic candidate urged Harris to oppose what he characterized as Israeli military actions in Gaza and Lebanon, emphasizing Michigan’s critical importance in defeating Republican political movements. Dearborn’s mayor notably refused to endorse Harris in 2024, as did Representative Rashida Tlaib, whose district includes the heavily Arab-American city.
Political Calculations and Jewish Voters
Harris additionally spoke with James Zogby, a Democratic National Committee member and longtime Palestinian activist, according to reports. In July 2024, shortly after Biden withdrew from the race, Harris declared she would not remain silent about civilian casualties and told ceasefire advocates she heard their concerns. She later sought discussions with Uncommitted leaders about potential arms embargo policies.
The former vice president attempted to balance these overtures by repeatedly affirming Israel’s right to self-defense, including in her nomination acceptance speech. However, exit polling showed Trump gained significant ground with Muslim American voters while Harris largely retained Biden’s Jewish vote share. Her current outreach suggests a calculation that securing the progressive base outweighs concerns about moderate and pro-Israel Democrats as the 2028 primary approaches.
