GOVERNMENT RUN Grocery Store Plan Triggers FIERCE Political BACKLASH

New York City’s socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani drew sharp criticism from conservatives after publicly rejecting President Ronald Reagan’s famous warning about big government while announcing the city’s first government-run grocery store in the Bronx.

Reagan Quote Disputed at Store Announcement

Mamdani, a democratic socialist and the city’s first Muslim mayor, directly challenged Reagan’s iconic statement during Monday’s announcement. Reagan famously declared that the nine most terrifying words in the English language are: “I’m from the government, and I’m here to help.” Mamdani called it a good quote but stated his disagreement. He countered that nine more terrifying words would be: “I worked all day and can’t feed my family.”

The mayor pledged to use government power to lower prices and help New Yorkers afford groceries. He emphasized that government must serve working people it has repeatedly left behind. The 20,000-square-foot Bronx location represents the first of five promised city-run grocery stores, scheduled to open sometime in 2027. A second location in East Harlem, serving as Manhattan’s flagship store, will open in 2029.

Conservative Backlash Erupts Online

Conservative commentators responded swiftly to Mamdani’s remarks. Eric Daugherty characterized the mayor’s approach as going “full deranged marxist” and predicted utter failure. Andrew Kolvet from Turning Point USA accused Mamdani of flipping Reagan’s warning upside down, arguing the government-run stores would use taxpayer advantages to undercut private businesses unfairly.

Jennifer Harrison, founder of the Victims Rights Reform Council, questioned the wisdom of government-run operations by pointing to New York City’s troubled public transportation system amid ongoing strikes. The official Republican Party account labeled Mamdani a communist when sharing video of his announcement. Critics consistently emphasized concerns about government overreach and inefficiency in managing commercial operations.

Campaign Promise Takes Shape

Government-run grocery stores formed a central campaign promise during Mamdani’s mayoral run. He described the Bronx location and its surrounding mixed-use development, called the Peninsula, as physical proof that government can drive positive change in people’s lives. The announcement drew cheers from supporters attending the Monday event, demonstrating divided public opinion on expanded government involvement in essential services like food retail.
