A Michigan Democratic state representative has launched a striking public rebuke of her own party’s progressive wing, calling socialist politicians more racist than the KKK and urging voters to reject Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed in the 2026 race.
Democrat Breaks Ranks Over Socialist Agenda
State Representative Karen Whitsett told Fox News Digital that Democratic Party leaders treat Black voters as a monolithic group who should automatically support left-wing candidates. She compared this approach to slavery, saying the socialist rise within her party takes Black voters for granted. Whitsett specifically criticized prominent figures including Al Sharpton and Detroit pastor Horace Sheffield III, an El-Sayed campaign surrogate, accusing them of working to keep Black voters politically controlled.
Whitsett directed particular criticism at white progressives within the Democratic Party. She claimed they represent the worst and most racist elements imaginable, asserting that the far-left wing exploits Black communities rather than genuinely serving their interests. The state representative questioned whether party leaders seek to help or harm Black communities through their policy positions.
Policy Concerns and Biblical Values
The retiring legislator, who will not seek reelection when her term expires this year, emphasized that her opposition stems from both religious convictions and practical concerns. Whitsett stated she prioritizes Bible-based principles and community welfare over party loyalty or political advancement. She argued that El-Sayed’s values do not align with her own or serve the best interests of Black Michigan voters.
Regarding El-Sayed’s Medicare for All proposal, Whitsett acknowledged supporting universal health insurance in principle but criticized the progressive candidate for failing to explain implementation details. She warned that the plan would insert government control into healthcare decisions without addressing fundamental capacity issues like doctor and nurse shortages. According to Whitsett, the proposal offers empty promises that would give bureaucrats decision-making power over individual medical care.
Controversy Over Campaign Associations
El-Sayed faces additional scrutiny for campaigning alongside socialist Twitch streamer Hasan Piker, who previously stated America deserved the September 11 attacks. Piker has also praised Mao Zedong and Communist China, advocated violence against capitalists, and made antisemitic remarks. The Senate candidate has declined to condemn Piker’s statements. Whitsett believes Black voters are awakening to recognize their political power and the serious divide between traditional Democrats and the far-left socialist faction. El-Sayed’s campaign did not respond to requests for comment on Whitsett’s criticism.
