Smithsonian THREATENED — Federal Support At Risk

The Trump administration has delivered a stark warning to the Smithsonian Institution, threatening to withdraw federal support unless the museum network addresses alleged violations of federal nondiscrimination laws and what conservatives describe as progressive bias in its presentation of American history.

Federal Investigation Uncovers Potential Violations

A joint letter from the Department of the Interior and the White House claims the administration discovered evidence that Smithsonian leadership created a hostile work environment and engaged in practices classifying individuals based on race, ethnicity, and other protected characteristics. The letter states these actions may constitute significant violations of federal antidiscrimination law. However, the administration did not provide specific evidence of illegal activity in the public letter or when contacted for additional information.

The administration’s investigation found that numerous Smithsonian leaders, including hiring managers, actively promoted diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. The Trump administration has consistently characterized these programs as racially discriminatory practices that violate federal law. A Fox News Digital investigation corroborated the widespread adoption of these policies throughout the institution’s leadership structure.

Conservative Criticism Targets Museum Programming

Conservative leaders, led by President Trump, have accused the Smithsonian of allowing progressive ideology to distort its historical exhibits. Fox News host Laura Ingraham highlighted concerns about what she termed an activist agenda promoting restorative history that presents America negatively. Critics pointed to controversial exhibits and educational materials, questioning whether taxpayer funds should support such programming. National Museum of American History director Anthea Hartig previously testified about the museum’s educational approach.

An executive order signed in 2025 directed federal officials to remove what the administration labeled improper ideology from the museum. The order specifically authorized the Secretary of the Interior, the Director of the Office of Management and Budget, the Administrator of General Services, and the Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy to restore trust in the institution.

Administration Leverages Board Appointments

The administration’s latest threats extend beyond the approximately one billion dollars in annual federal funding the Smithsonian receives. The letter warns that executive departments and agencies cannot support the institution by loaning artifacts, enabling procurement processes, or providing discretionary grants under current leadership. The administration indicated that four board of regents positions will open by October, potentially allowing increased influence over the institution’s direction.

Liberal critics have characterized conservative opposition as a partisan attempt to control the public presentation of history. The Smithsonian operates independently but remains subject to board oversight by members appointed through congressional resolutions requiring presidential approval. The administration’s letter emphasized that any appropriate response must address executive leadership and institutional ideology, suggesting potential leadership changes may be necessary.
