ICE Investigation Remains Active
On Sunday, Trump shared an August 12 report from Just the News revealing ICE cited ongoing enforcement proceedings as the reason for withholding records related to an Omar fraud investigation. The president’s decision to amplify the weeks-old report renewed questions about whether the Somali-born representative might face legal consequences for alleged immigration violations that have shadowed her political career since before her election to Congress.
The renewed attention comes months after border czar Tom Homan announced in December that the Trump administration was investigating Omar for alleged immigration fraud. Trump himself confirmed in January that the Justice Department was examining the case, though he provided no timeline for potential charges or enforcement actions.
Marriage Controversy Background
The allegations center on Omar’s complex marital history. After arriving in America as a refugee, Omar married Ahmed Hirsi in a Muslim ceremony in 2002 and had children with him, though the marriage was not legally registered. In 2009, she legally married Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, a British-Somali national whom multiple Somali sources have identified as her alleged brother, according to reports.
Omar separated from Elmi through a Muslim divorce in 2011 and reunited with Hirsi in 2012, having another child together. However, she did not legally divorce Elmi until 2017. During 2014 and 2015, while still legally married to Elmi, Omar filed joint tax returns with Hirsi, which violates federal and state law according to The Hill.
Conflicting Claims and Denials
A self-identified friend of Omar, Abdihakim Osman, claimed to the Daily Mail in 2020 that Omar confirmed Elmi was her brother and that she married him to help him remain in the United States. Omar has repeatedly denied these allegations, calling them absolutely false and ridiculous in a 2016 statement. She described suggestions that Elmi is her brother as absurd and offensive, though no DNA evidence has been publicly presented to definitively resolve the question.
