Representative Haley Stevens, a Michigan Democrat, has publicly endorsed several Trump administration economic initiatives, including federal equity stakes in strategic industries and collaborative frameworks for energy infrastructure development.
Government Ownership in Private Industry
Stevens supports the administration’s approach of taking ownership stakes when federal dollars fund private companies. She specifically referenced federal support received by Elon Musk, suggesting the current administration’s equity stake model makes sense. The Trump administration has pursued direct equity investments in strategically important sectors, converting $8.9 billion in Intel funding into a 9.9% nonvoting stake and securing a 15% Pentagon stake in rare-earth producer MP Materials. Both investments have appreciated since acquisition, though gains remain unrealized until shares are sold.
The Michigan congresswoman told Fox News Digital that raising revenues for healthcare and infrastructure extends beyond taxation. She advocates for collaboration between ratepayers and data center developers, public stakes in high-growth industries, and loan guarantees for critical mineral extraction. Stevens also emphasizes American manufacturing and deterring adversaries from hostage-taking as areas ripe for bipartisan cooperation.
Political Tensions Remain
Despite finding common ground on economic issues, Stevens maintains sharp partisan divisions. She recently lost a Senate primary to Abdul El-Sayed, whom she previously criticized during their contentious contest. Stevens accused El-Sayed of unfairly singling out Jewish Americans while positioning herself as the more moderate candidate. Following her narrow defeat, she endorsed El-Sayed and warned that Republican Senate nominee Mike Rogers would rubber-stamp Trump’s chaotic agenda.
The White House responded coolly to Stevens’ selective support. Spokesman Kush Desai noted Stevens voted against President Trump over 80 percent of the time, including opposition to the Great One Big Beautiful Bill, described as the largest working-class tax cut in history. Desai characterized her claims of supporting Trump’s economic agenda as disingenuous given her voting record.
Energy and Manufacturing Focus
Stevens endorsed the Trump administration’s Ratepayer Protection Pledge, a framework coordinating utilities, data center developers, cooperatives, and state governments to maintain affordable energy prices during artificial intelligence infrastructure expansion. She drew parallels to her Obama administration work on the bipartisan auto-rescue task force, which included Bush appointees and Republicans coordinating federal resources at local levels.
The congresswoman expressed particular enthusiasm for critical minerals development, arguing America must strengthen domestic production capabilities. While supporting targeted tax increases on the wealthiest Americans, Stevens believes economic growth through strategic government investments offers a viable path toward balancing federal budgets and funding social programs.
