The federal government issued its highest-level safety warning after nearly 1.6 million pounds of popular meat products including hot dogs, bacon, and brisket were recalled nationwide due to temperature abuse during storage that could cause serious illness or death.
Cooling System Failure Triggers Massive Recall
Kayem Foods Inc. voluntarily recalled approximately 1,584,361 pounds of ready-to-eat meat and poultry products after discovering a cooling system malfunction at one of its warehouses caused temperature deviations during storage. The Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service classified this recall at the highest level, indicating a reasonable probability that consuming affected products could cause serious health consequences or death.
The recalled items include widely distributed brands like Kayem Beef and Pork Hot Dogs, Kayem Double Smoked Thick Cut Bacon, Kayem Slow Smoked Beef Brisket, Al Fresco Roasted Pepper and Asiago Chicken Sausage, and various ham products. These items were shipped to retail stores and restaurants across the country and internationally to Hong Kong between March 31 and October 7.
Customer Complaint Exposes Warehouse Problem
The issue came to light on October 1 when Kayem received a retail customer complaint about warm product temperatures upon delivery. Company investigators determined that ready-to-eat meat and poultry products had been stored in a warehouse cooler experiencing temperature deviations from the cooling system malfunction. Kayem stated it has corrected the problem and is conducting the recall out of an abundance of caution, though no confirmed illnesses have been reported.
Affected products bear establishment numbers EST. M/P 7839, EST. P 20935A, and EST. M 9520 inside the USDA mark of inspection. The company provided a nine-page list detailing all recalled items to help consumers identify potentially dangerous products.
What Families Should Do Now
Federal food safety officials expressed concern that affected products may currently be in consumers’ refrigerators. Americans who purchased these items should not consume them under any circumstances. Instead, throw the products away immediately or return them to the store for a refund. Anyone experiencing illness potentially linked to these products should contact their healthcare provider promptly. This recall underscores the critical importance of proper food storage in protecting American families from preventable health dangers.
