RECALL WARNING: FIRE Risk – Park Outside

More than 94,000 Hyundai and Genesis vehicle owners face an urgent fire risk even when their cars are parked and turned off, prompting federal safety officials to issue an extraordinary warning: park outside immediately and away from other vehicles and structures.

Dangerous Defect Triggers Federal Warning

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration identified a critical flaw in the power seat control switch of certain Genesis models that can cause the motor to overheat and ignite a fire. The recall affects specific 2015 and 2016 Hyundai Genesis sedans along with 2017 through 2020 Genesis G80 models. Federal regulators took the unusual step of advising owners to change their parking habits immediately because the defect poses a fire hazard even when vehicles sit idle with engines off.

Hyundai confirmed two fire incidents linked directly to this malfunction, according to documents submitted to federal safety authorities. The company has not yet developed a repair solution but plans to notify affected owners by mail around December 1. Despite the fire incidents, no crashes or injuries have been reported in connection with this defect.

What Vehicle Owners Must Do Now

Owners of affected Genesis models should take immediate action to protect their property and families. Federal officials recommend parking these vehicles outdoors in open areas, maintaining distance from other cars, homes, garages, and buildings. This precaution remains necessary until Hyundai completes development of a fix and owners can schedule repairs at authorized dealerships. The company is working to expedite a solution for this safety concern.

Growing Pattern of Auto Safety Concerns

This recall highlights ongoing challenges in automotive safety as modern vehicles incorporate increasingly complex electrical systems. Auto manufacturers issue safety recalls when vehicles or their components fail to meet federal safety standards or create hazards for drivers and passengers. The power seat mechanism, typically considered a convenience feature rather than a critical safety system, now presents an unexpected fire risk that demands immediate attention from thousands of American families who rely on these vehicles for daily transportation.
