The Department of Homeland Security has publicly condemned Boston Mayor Michelle Wu for attempting to discourage private property owners from leasing parking spaces to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, calling her actions “unhinged” and accusing her of “hunting down” law-abiding business owners.
Federal Agencies Clash Over Parking Spaces
The confrontation began after Boston prohibited ICE vehicles from using city-owned parking facilities for staging operations. ICE then issued a notice seeking to rent 249 contiguous parking spaces from private owners in Boston for a five-year period. The agency made similar requests in 13 other cities nationwide as part of its surge enforcement operations.
Mayor Wu responded with an official letter to parking garage and lot owners throughout Boston, urging them to reject any proposals from ICE. She claimed that allowing ICE to secure such facilities would create significant risks to public safety and harm economic activity across the region. Wu also revealed that the city filed a Freedom of Information Act request seeking all local responses to the ICE parking notice.
DHS Accuses Mayor of Intimidation Tactics
DHS fired back through social media posts, stating that Wu lacks authority to prevent ICE from using private property. The agency accused the mayor of intimidating and threatening property owners rather than addressing criminal activity by illegal immigrants. DHS further criticized Wu as a “pro-criminal illegal alien politician” and referenced her past comparison of ICE agents to a neo-Nazi group.
The FOIA request itself became a point of contention, with DHS asserting it demonstrated Wu’s acknowledgment that she cannot legally block federal law enforcement from utilizing privately owned facilities. The agency emphasized that private citizens should be free to allow federal officers onto their property without facing coercion from local officials.
City Defends Position on Public Safety
A Boston spokesperson defended the mayor’s stance, claiming that leaders across the political spectrum agree ICE surge operations compromise community safety. The city argued that such enforcement actions force businesses to close temporarily to protect employees and customers, devastating local economic activity. The spokesperson characterized the mayor’s letter as an effort to prevent an unwarranted escalation that would endanger communities and undermine public safety.
The Boston City Council reinforced Wu’s position by adopting an emergency resolution earlier this month, directing the city to explore all available options to oppose the proposed ICE parking leases in downtown Boston. Wu had previously joined six other Greater Boston cities in signing executive orders prohibiting ICE from staging operations on municipal property.

These democrats in these cities, have or think they have the power to stop our federal ifficers when they actually override city and state when it comes to authority of law enforcement. Lets not forget that. These communists mayors and Governor’s are acting like they own and control our country and laws though they refuse to uphold the laws in their states. They cannot pick and choose which ones to enforce like tgey have been and this goes for radical left woke prosecutors and Judges. This crap needs to stop or our federal agents should be arrested these oeaders as well. They dont own our states, the people do and they are suppose to be working for all the people not just certain groups of the people.
