A licensed concealed carry holder prevented further bloodshed at an Oregon elementary school Thursday after fatally shooting a 16-year-old gunman who had already killed three children and one adult. Federal law enforcement sources confirmed the armed bystander “definitely prevented more deaths” when he pursued the teenage shooter into Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend and engaged him before police arrived.
Timeline of Heroic Intervention
The attack began at 12:59 p.m. when the teen gunman fired multiple shots at a vehicle before forcing his way into the locked school by shooting through doors. A community member witnessed the shooter entering the building and immediately pursued him inside. Police Chief Mike Krantz reported that officers arrived within three minutes of the first emergency call, but the armed citizen had already neutralized the threat. Officers confirmed the suspect was dead and cleared the building for additional threats before rendering emergency aid to survivors.
Victims and Community Response
The young victims included children ages 5, 8, and 11 who died at the scene. Two others remained in critical condition at St. Charles Bend: a 7-year-old student and a 54-year-old teacher. The teenage shooter, a Bend resident armed with a shotgun, was also found dead. Governor Tina Kotek praised the community member who “heroically intervened to stop further loss of life,” acknowledging the heavy emotional burden such actions carry. Bend-La Pine Schools Superintendent Steven Cook called the incident an “unthinkable tragedy,” noting this was the scenario communities pray never happens locally.
Investigation and Preparedness
Investigators have not yet determined how far the shooter penetrated the building or whether he had connections to anyone at Silver Rail Elementary. Police are examining whether the teen previously attended the school. Chief Krantz revealed that every Bend police officer completed a full day of active threat training at a local high school just two months earlier in August. The FBI’s Portland field office joined local authorities in the investigation, promising every available resource. A substantial police presence will remain at the school for several days as the investigation continues into what motivated the deadly attack.
