Democratic Socialists of America-backed Senate candidate Angie Nixon paid thousands of dollars to a social media manager who publicly celebrated Hamas as freedom fighters and posted antisemitic statements calling for violence against Jewish supporters of Israel.
Extreme Social Media Posts Surface
Nour Mahmoud, who worked as Nixon’s social media manager from June through July, made dozens of inflammatory posts documented by antisemitism watchdog Canary Mission. In one deleted post, Mahmoud wrote directly asking if Zionists could die. Federal Election Commission records show Nixon’s campaign paid Mahmoud at least eight thousand four hundred dollars during her employment period. Additional payments may appear in third-quarter filings due next month.
On November 18, 2018, the same day Hamas launched approximately four hundred rockets into Israel from Gaza, Mahmoud posted praise for the terror organization. She wrote about glory and honor for freedom fighters while praying for their safety and success. She later shared celebration posts marking Hamas’s thirty-first anniversary, referring to Palestine as Arab Palestinian land.
Pattern of Antisemitic Statements
Mahmoud’s posts went beyond criticism of Israeli government policy. In 2016, she targeted white Jewish supporters of Israel specifically, writing that white Jews were entitled and should die. She repeatedly equated Zionism with white supremacy and white nationalism. In 2017, she posted about Twitter banning her for suggesting Zionists should choke. Her comments spanned from 2015 through her recent employment with the Nixon campaign.
Campaign Response and Candidate’s Position
Nixon’s campaign spokesperson declined to state whether they knew about Mahmoud’s posts when hiring her or whether they considered the statements appropriate. The campaign confirmed Mahmoud no longer works for them, citing another employment opportunity. Nixon herself has called for reducing U.S. aid to Israel and reevaluating the partnership, though she frames her position as focused on humanitarian concerns rather than antisemitism. Speaking before Florida’s Legislature, Nixon defended her stance by saying caring about innocent lives does not constitute antisemitism.
Democratic Socialists Platform Alignment
The overlap between DSA support and opposition to Israel extends beyond individual staffers. The Democratic Socialists of America website explicitly recognizes Palestinian rights including the right to resist military occupation and self-determination in a free Palestine with Jerusalem as capital. Nixon, who secured DSA backing for her Senate bid, has aligned her policy positions with these views while maintaining her criticism targets only Israeli government actions rather than Jewish people broadly.
