Presidential Praise Contradicts Campaign Warnings
Trump met with Mamdani at Gracie Mansion on Monday, telling reporters the first-term mayor has “great potential” while patting him on the back. The friendly encounter marked their third meeting since Mamdani became the nation’s first socialist and first Muslim mayor of its most populous city. Less than two weeks earlier, Trump had warned Republicans at a Dallas convention about a “communist takeover” of the Democratic Party, calling Democrat socialists “actually communists.”
The timing has frustrated GOP strategists working to maintain congressional control. “All of it is self-inflicted, off-message, not helpful,” one anonymous Republican strategist told Fox News Digital. “None of these candidates out in these states, where these races are tighter and more competitive than they should be, are helped by any of this.” Another consultant suggested Trump appears to be in a “fully self-indulgent period” without genuine concern for winning.

Right-wing activist Laura Loomer, who has developed an influential role as a Trump confidant, expressed strong disapproval on social media. She called Mamdani a “full blown communist jihadist” and questioned how the meeting would affect loyal supporters told to fight communism. “The base is very angry today,” Loomer wrote, noting the encounter came less than 45 days before midterms.
Not all Trump allies shared the criticism. Alex Bruesewitz, a longtime aide now serving as an outside adviser, defended the president’s approach. “It’s not wrong to have friendly relationships with people you disagree with,” he wrote on social media. “In fact, it’s healthy and good for you.”
